The world of hotels and resorts is one of the most competitive in any business. And it takes a special hotel to be the named the best in the world. For fashion icon, investor, and hotelier Chris Burch, winning recognition for best hotel in the world is just another in a list of long accomplishments.
So who exactly is Chris Burch? If you are a fan of fashion then his name probably sounds familiar. Burch was the co-founder of Tory Burch along with his wife. After selling his shares of the company for over a billion dollars, Mr. Burch decided to expand his creative innovation to other industries. First, Mr. Burch became a seed investor in many small companies. Then he decided to expand into the highly competitive hotel world. And it is here that Mr. Burch made a name for himself yet again.
Mr. Burch, along with his business partner, purchased an island in Indonesia known as Sumba. The deal closed for an undisclosed amount in 2012. Mr. Burch’s plan was to renovate the already existing structures into a 5-star resort. After spending over three years and $30 million dollars, Mr. Burch finally finished his dream project, crowing the resort with the name Nihiwatu.
Nihiwatu opened in 2015 to rave reviews. In fact, the hotel was named the best in the world by travel magazine Travel + Leisure in 2016 (businessinsider.com). It was quite an astounding fact considering that Mr. Burch was new to the hotel business. However, it appeared that the fashion icon was able to translate the magic he created from Tory Burch over to the hotel business.
Chris Burch has spent the last 40 years of his life as both an investor in many companies as well as an innovator in the world of fashion and hotels. Mr. Burch’s investment company, Burch Creative Capital, has invested in more than 50 businesses in the past decade alone (http://www.burchcreativecapital.com). Among the companies in Mr. Burch’s portfolio include Nihiwatu, Poppin, ED by Ellen DeGeneres and Cocoon9.
Mr. Burch began his career by creating Eagle Eye Apparel in 1972, while he was still attending college. The business took off eventually generating over $140 million in sales. In 2004, Chris Burch co-founded Tory Burch with his wife. After selling his share of the company, Mr. Burch launched Burch Creative Capital. Additionally, Mr. Burch launched the fashion and home decor retailer C. Wonder in 2011, eventually selling it in 2015.
